Description:
East China Normal University (ECNU) was established in 1951 through a merger of 11 universities and teacher training colleges. Its purpose is to serve as a centre for the training and development of secondary school teachers in the East China region. The correspondence education department was established in 1956 and enrolled students from the provinces of Anhui, Shandong, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and from the city of Shanghai. In 1966 the department was closed down because of the Cultural Revolution. However, it was revived in 1978 and in 1986, with the approval of the State Education Commission, the department of Adult Education was established. The distance education programme of ECNU is under the administration of this department. Since 1983, ECNU has been allowed by the Ministry of Education to confer Bachelors degrees on correspondence students on an experimental basis.

The department offers courses at undergraduate degree level (5 year programme) and at junior college diploma level (3 year programme). Subjects offered are: political science, history, Chinese language and literature, library and information science, mathematics, physics, geography, biology and physical education.

Admission:
Applicants should possess secondary school qualifications and should apply for subjects related to the subjects they teach. Applicants are also required to sit an entrance examination.

Services:
Printed correspondence material is the main method of instruction. In addition, during the summer and winter vacations students are required to attend face-to-face sessions at local coaching stations for two weeks. Laboratory experiments and field-work trips are part of the two week summer and winter schools.

Assessment is by assignments which include exercises and quizzes and final examinations. Liberal and arts students are required to complete six to eight courses and science students have to complete between four to five courses in an academic year.

Statistical summary:
In 1990, ECNU had 3,814 correspondence students enrolled with an additional intake of 412 in 1991. During the period 1978 to 1990, 779 students graduated with a junior college level diploma and 5,196 students graduated with a Bachelors degree. The Department of Adult Education has 40 full-time teachers and 60 administrative staff.

Funding comes from two sources; each year the State Education Commission grants funds equal to US $134,000 and the Shanghai Higher Education Bureau allocates funds equal to US $40,000. Students are not required to pay any fees, but their employers must contribute towards administrative costs of coaching stations and pay for students' travel costs associated with attendance at face-to-face sessions.
